Lummi Nation School Inclement Weather Policy

Student, staff, and family safety guides decisions about school operations during severe weather. Snow, ice, flooding, strong winds, extreme temperatures, heavy rain, and other hazardous conditions may result in a school closure, delayed opening, or early dismissal.

  • The Lead Principal or designated school official will determine whether to close school, delay opening, or dismiss students early. Decisions will consider weather forecasts, road conditions, campus conditions, and safety risks to students and staff.

School closures and delayed openings will be announced by 6:00 a.m. on the affected day. If conditions change after an announcement, the school will provide an update as soon as possible.

  • ParentSquare is the school’s primary channel for weather-related notifications. The school will use ParentSquare to send closure, delay, early dismissal, and transportation updates through email, text messages, app notifications, and automated phone calls, as appropriate.

Updates will also be shared through:

    • The Lummi Nation School website and school social media accounts.
    • The LIBC and Lummi Nation School Emergency Hotline: 360-380-6998.
    • Local radio and television announcements.

Families and staff should keep their phone numbers and email addresses current with the school and review their ParentSquare notification settings. During severe weather, check for updates before leaving home.

  • When school is closed due to severe weather, classes, school activities, and after-school programs are canceled.

If hazardous conditions continue for multiple days, the school will provide updates about additional closures or schedule changes.

  • A delayed opening allows additional time for travel and for conditions to improve. The school’s announcement will identify the delayed start time and any transportation changes.

Families should follow the instructions in the latest announcement and avoid arriving before the announced opening time.

  • If conditions worsen during the school day, the school may dismiss students early. Families will receive notification through ParentSquare, with updates also posted through the school’s other communication channels.

Families should have an early dismissal plan and arrange for their child to be safely received at home or picked up from school, as applicable. Keep emergency contacts and pickup information current with the school.

  • Weather and road conditions may differ across the communities we serve. Parents and guardians should use their judgment when deciding whether their child can travel safely.

If conditions make travel unsafe, keep your child home and notify the school office. Students who cannot attend because of weather-related safety concerns will not be penalized. Families must communicate the reason for the absence to the school.

The school will work to clear snow and ice from pathways, entrances, and parking areas when possible. Students, staff, and visitors should use caution, as slippery conditions may remain.

  • Weather may affect bus routes, pickup times, and drop-off arrangements. Any changes will be communicated through ParentSquare and school updates.

    For transportation questions, contact:

    • Transportation Office: 360-758-4321
    • Transportation Cell: 360-441-9721
  • Staff are expected to report as scheduled unless a closure, delay, or other reporting instruction has been announced. Employees should use their judgment if travel is unsafe and promptly notify their supervisor if they cannot report safely.

During a delayed opening, staff should report as soon as conditions safely allow, but no later than the announced delayed start time. Staff unable to meet that time should contact their supervisor.

During an early dismissal, staff must help ensure students depart safely and complete necessary duties before leaving.

  • After-school programs, extracurricular activities, and athletic events may be canceled when school dismisses early or hazardous conditions persist. The school will communicate activity-specific changes through ParentSquare and other school channels.
